Coordinate Conjuctions

Coordinate conjunctions adalah konjungsi yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua atau lebih kata, frase, atau klausa (independent clause) yang mempunyai kedudukan setara atau struktur yang sama dalam kalimat. Ada tujuh konjungsi yang digunakan yaitu: and, but, so, nor, or, for, yet.

  •  Contoh kalimat Coordinate Conjunctions

1. And (dan) : Penambahan Kalimat.

example: if we don't use a flash, the pictures will be blurred and not so bright.

2. But (tetapi) : Pertentangan Kalimat.

example: i have a perfect object to shoot, but I don't have my camera with me!

3. So (agar) : Hasil.

example: she is still busy shooting the objects, so she can't talk with you now.

4. Nor (tidak,maupun) : Penambahan.

example: Neither my mother nor my father likes football.

5. Or (atau) : Pilihan.

example: We're not sure where winda's from, Africa or Timor Leste.

6. For (untuk, karena) : Sebab dan akibat.

example: Mitta always keeps the lights on, for she is afraid of sleeping in the dark.

7. Yet (namun) : Pertentangan.

example: Dhea enjoys learning Math, yet he doesn’t enjoy learning accountancy.

  • Hal penting yang perlu diingat ketika menggunakan coordinating conjunctions:
1. Sebaiknya gunakan konjungsi di tengah kalimat. Konjungsi yang terletak di awal kalimat secara gramatikal memang tidak disarankan. Meskipun begitu, untuk menarik perhatian atau menegaskan tambahan informasi lain yang berkaitan dengan kalimat sebelumnya, struktur kalimat dengan konjungsi di awal kalimat sekarang ini sudah umum dipakai.

2. Gunakan tanda koma. Jika menggunakan klausa gunakan tanda koma sebelum konjungsi. Tetapi, jika klausa itu pendek, misalnya pada kalimat She is kind so she helps people, maka koma bisa tidak dipakai. Pada kata/frase, sebaiknya gunakan tanda koma pada akhir kata/frase atau sebelum konjungsi yang terdapat dua atau lebih kata/frase, seperti contoh di atas: It can be black, white or grey.

3. Jika memakai klausa gunakan independent clause. Setiap klausa yang dihubungkan dengan konjungsi harus dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai kalimat jika konjungsi dihilangkan.

HAVE SOMETHING DONE

Have Something Done adalah kalimat yang berbentuk pasif. “have something done” yaitu telah melakukan sebuah kegiatan. Contohnya seperti ini,
Take a look at this two sentences what is difference in meaning between them?
“I cut my hair”
“I have my hair cut”
Pada kalimat diatas terdapat suatu perbedaan dalam pengartiannya.
Pada kalimat “I cut my hair” artinya berarti bahwa “saya memotong rambut saya”, jadi yang memotong rambut tersebut adalah saya sendiri.
Pada kalimat “I have my hair cut” artinya bahwa saya memotong rambut dengan jasa orang lain. Jadi perbedaannya jika “I cut my hair” saya melakukan sendiri dan pada kalimat “I have my hair cut” rambut saya dipotong oleh orang lain.

Perhatikan beberapa contoh dibawah ini :

DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH

·         Direct/Quoted speech is saying exactly what someone has said. It appears within Quotation marks ("...") and should be word for word.
Direct speech repeats, or quotes, the exact words spoken. When we use direct speech in writing, we put the words spoken between inverted commas ("___") and there is no change in these words. We may be reporting something that's being said NOW, or telling someone later about a previous conversation

·         Indirect/Reported speech is enclosing what the person said. It doesn't use quotation Marks and doesn't have to be word for word.
Indirect speech is usually used to talk about the past. When we use indirect speech, we don’t use inverted comas. We should change the tense of the words spoken. We use reporting verbs for example say, ask, and we may use the word that to introduce the reported words.

Ø  Example:

  • Statement
Direct speech  : My father said to me, “I don’t like shopping”
Indirect speech :  My father said to me that he didn’t like shopping.
  •  Orders
When we want to report an order, we can use a verb like tell with to-clause:
Direct speech  : The doctor said to me, "Stop smoking!”
Indirect speech : The doctor told me to stop smoking.
  • Requests
When we want to report a request, we can use a verb like ask with for-clause:
Direct speech  : The child asked, "Can I have a laptop?"
Indirect speech : The child asked for a laptop.
  • Suggestions
Suggestions are usually reported with a that-clause. That and should are optional in these clauses.
Direct speech  : “I think you should go to the school", said my aunt.
Indirect speech : My aunt suggested that I should go to the school.

  •  Questions
Question words are reported by using ask (or another verb like ask) + question word + clause. (see also section on Tense Change)
Direct speech  : My mother asked me, “Where do you live?”
Indirect speech : She asked me where I lived.

  •  Time Change
If direct speech sentence contains an expression of time, we must change it to fit in with the time.
